Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders related to the dental pulp and the tissue surrounding the root of the tooth. The dental pulp is the internal tissue of the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. A common procedure in endodontics is “endodontics or root canal treatment”, which is usually performed when the dental pulp is infected or inflamed due to deep cavities, traumatic injuries or gum disease.
During a root canal, the endodontist or dentist carefully removes damaged or infected pulp. The resulting space is cleaned, disinfected and sealed with a special material to prevent reinfection.
Symptoms such as severe pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, swelling around the tooth, dental abscesses, or changes in tooth color may indicate the need for a root canal. However, only a dentist can make an accurate diagnosis.
The duration of a root canal treatment can vary depending on the complexity of the case. In many cases, it can be completed in one or two visits to the dentist.
Generally, you should not feel pain during the root canal treatment, as local anesthesia is used to numb the area. After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
